The Ravens Aren't the Only Ones Celebrating

Posted by Cassie Bair on Feb 4, 2013 7:35:00 AM

As the Ravens revel in the Super Bowl win and fans everywhere recover from the festivities, mGive celebrates another type of victory. On February 3, during Super Bowl XLVII, the Wounded Warrior Project tapped into the tendency of football fans everywhere to have their phones in-hand and asked viewers to become everyday philanthropists by making a $10 text donation. (Check out the heart-tugging PSA here.)

This marked five years since the launch of the very first text campaign - also promoted at the Super Bowl!  In 2008, when the Giants and the Patriots faced off, football fans everywhere pulled out their phones and with simple text communication helped kids stay fit by supporting United Way. That very first call-to-action in the U.S. launched a platform that changed fundraising and started a revolution of philanthropic giving.

However, it doesn’t take a Super Bowl ad to tap into the power of rallying the masses in a moment’s notice. Groups like the United Way and Wounded Warrior Project just remind us how powerful the mobile channel can be. We constantly work to ensure that mGive gives every nonprofit that same powerhouse to tap into - no matter what opportunity is before them.

Where is mGive Going From Here?

Posted by mGive Team on Sep 7, 2011 6:45:00 AM

Nestled in the eclectic Lower Highlands neighborhood overlooking the glossy high-rises of downtown Denver, mGive calls an 1896 red brick building “home.” We recently took a good hard look at ourselves, asking, “Where is mGive going from here?” A question many, if not all, organizations face at some point in their growth cycle.

Our answer to the age-old question came when a team member casually mentioned in a sales meeting, “You can’t know where you’re going, unless you know where you've been.” And with that, we collectively began looking at our past in anticipation of our journey ahead.

It’s often easy to forget that mGive, along with the mobile donation channel, was founded only a few years ago. Our goal of making a difference through mobile was quickly embraced by the nation’s top wireless carriers, not to mention The Red Cross, The United Way and hundreds of other nonprofits, big and small. Soon after we opened shop in 2005, mGive was placed on a steady path of SMS (text) donation, engagement, advocacy and innovation.

Text or Treat for UNICEF

In 1950, UNICEF became a Halloween tradition when a group of children in Philadelphia donated $17 they received on Halloween. The Trick-or-Treat UNICEF box has become a staple each Halloween season. The small orange boxes are handed to children at schools and at various retail locations. To date, these boxes carried by children as they trick or treat for candy has collected approximately over $132 million.

This October, UNICEF opened the new media treasure chest with a slew of new digital initiatives, fundraising tools, and college level campaigns.  According to Caryl Stern, President and CEO of the U.S. Fund for UNICEF, "Reaching technologically savvy young people and engaging them on their level was essential for us not only to bring Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF into the 21st century, but also to underscore our commitment to do whatever it takes to save a child's life."

With a new take on the traditional orange boxes, UNICEF has launched a new fundraising campaign - 'Text or Treat for UNICEF'. Powered by mGive, the campaign allows to supporters to text "TOT" to 864233 (UNICEF) to make a $5 donation, or choose a favorite Trick or Treater to support.
